Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

English

This term, the children have been reading a wide selection of texts including:

  • The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
  • The Long Walk to Freedom (Nelson Mandela)
  • Virginia Hall – WW11 Spy
  • Running on Empty

They have really enjoyed learning about the central characters and using these texts to inspire their own fantastic writing.

SPAG and Writing

During our sessions, the children have been learning how to apply

semi-colons and colons as well as other punctuation to their own sentences.

Each morning, they practise 5 star sentences that require them to write and include commands, exclamations, dialogue, modal verbs, adverbial phrases, articles and a range of nouns, adjectives, verbs and words with spelling patterns covered during this term.

Maths

This term, children have worked on place value of numbers up to 10,000,000, how to round numbers to different degrees of accuracy, how to order fractions, addition and subtraction of fractions as well as how to multiply and divide fractions. They use their fluency in these skills to apply to missing number challenges and worded problems.

Children begin most lessons with some times table’s revision, basic skills and a hook that requires them to apply previous learning. They are working incredibly hard and are enjoying our sessions.

Science

As well as learning about Charles Darwin and Carl Linnaeus, our Year 6 children have been able to classify organisms into different categories. They have also explored how different living things are able to adapt to their environments and how these organisms can evolve over time. The children also looked at how fossils are formed and even re-created this using jelly and sweets to replicate the layers of rock over time. The best part, I think, was when they got to eat them!

Art and DT, RE and Computing

This term, children have studied the works of Kandinsky and they are now completing their shelters. They learned all about Martin Luther King in RE as well as promises that are made in the bible.

In Computing, children created their own digital books using the Book Creator App. These were based on Maths Problems that included animations and sound. We have also been looking at how to stay safe when using online websites and other social media.

At the start of the year, the children received a daily workshop with a lovely man called Dave. He taught them all about the importance of making the right choices and about the devastating consequences of being in a gang. Dave said that the children were such a respectful class.

I am very proud of how well the children have settled into their final year and I know they are going to continue to work just as hard during their final two terms at Ravenscroft.

Well done Year 6.
