PSHE/RSE

Why we teach PSHE?

At Ravenscroft we teach PSHE so that children have a good understanding and sense of the world around them. We want our children to grow up with a good understanding of how to look after their own health and wellbeing and the health of others around them if they need to.  We want our children to grow up with great self esteem and with the confidence to discuss how they are feeling and try to help others too.  We want our children to develop a sense of responsibility and understanding for the world around them and our school community.  Our children will also learn how to respond in an emergency situation and try to stay calm whilst acting responsibly.

How we teach PSHE?

At Ravenscroft we teach PSHE through the Kapow scheme of work. The EYFS part consists of 3 main areas of learning; self regulation, building relationships and managing myself this matches up to the personal, social and emotional prime areas within the EYFS framework. For KS1 and KS2 the scheme consists of 5 main areas across KS1 and KS2: 1- Families and Relationships, 2 – Health and Wellbeing, 3 – Safety and the Changing Body, 4 – Citizenship and 5 – Economic Wellbeing.  We teach through a progression of themes which are consistent throughout the school and  each strand of the scheme is revisited each year to allow the children to upon prior learning. Our scheme of work will link to key dates across the year where possible (anti-bullying week, mental health awareness and healthy eating). Carefully planned PSHE time each week provides the opportunity for children to discuss and share their own views and opinions, helping children to make informed choices. Lessons follow a careful sequence which allow children to be introduced to a topic and this allows  teachers to set ground rules for future lessons. Lessons follow a safe and structured flow where children can feel nurtured and protected.
