History

Why teach History?

At Ravenscroft, our aim is that through the teaching of history, we stimulate all children’s interest and understanding about the events and lives of people who lived in the past. We teach the children a sense of chronology, in order to develop a sense of identity and cultural understanding based on their historical heritage. This enables our children to learn to value their own and other people’s cultures in modern, multi-cultural Britain. We want children to appreciate, understand and value local, British and world history through local studies, learning visits and enrichment opportunities. Through the teaching of history, we enable children to ask perceptive questions, promote curiosity, think critically and develop perspective. We aim to ensure there is a progressive development of historical concepts, knowledge and skills for children to develop a love of history.

How we teach History

Our history curriculum has been progressively planned across the year groups. It is taught following the National Curriculum Programme of Study. Key knowledge and skills are built on year upon year, with key concepts being specifically taught within each year group. History is taught through dedicated topics with cross curricular links planned wherever possible so to maximise curriculum coverage. Teachers link prior knowledge to new learning to deepen children’s learning. Careful consideration has been given to ensure progression of key knowledge, skills and vocabulary. We offer opportunities for children to go out and participate in ‘real life’ experiences, providing engagement through visits and studying localities first-hand.
